5 Mindfulness Practices to Ensure You're Fully Present on Your Wedding Day

Your wedding day is not just an event; it's a tapestry of moments and emotions meant to be experienced fully, not just lived through. As someone who has been filming weddings and elopements for over a decade, I've had the privilege of witnessing countless couples navigate their special day. Those who are truly present stand out. Their joy is palpable, their connections deeper, and their memories more vivid. My hope and goal for every couple is that they can intentionally curate a day that keeps them in the present moment, engaging all their senses, and allows them to lay aside all worries and concerns, embracing every moment of their beautiful celebration of love.

Here are five mindfulness practices to help ensure you're fully present and joyfully connected on your wedding day:

1. Start Mindfully

The tone for your day is set the moment you wake up. Carve out 15-20 minutes before the flurry of the day begins for practices that ground you and bring your mind into a state of calm alertness. Meditation, deep breathing, or a gentle yoga session can center your thoughts and emotions. Engaging all your senses from the start encourages a mindset of awareness and appreciation for all the beautiful intricacies of the day to come.

2. Engage All Your Senses

The beauty of your wedding day lies in the details—the light fragrance of your bouquet, the intricate flavors of your meal, the texture of your dress or suit, the visual beauty of your surroundings, and the sounds of your environment filling the air. Actively use all five senses. Whether it's feeling the warmth of the sun or the cool drops of rain, tasting and savoring the carefully chosen menu, or listening intently to the timbre of your partner's vows, let these sensory experiences anchor you in the now. Soak in and cherish every little detail.

3. Cultivate Gratitude

Take moments throughout your day to reflect on the journey that has brought you here. Think of the people who have supported you, those who are celebrating with you, and those who could not be with you but are there in spirit. A gratitude practice enhances your emotional connection to the day, shifting focus from the superficial to the substantial, and enriching your wedding with deeper significance.

4. Embrace the Unexpected

As you step into the celebration, let go of lingering expectations and embrace the day as it unfolds. The perfection of your wedding isn't found in flawless execution but in the genuine moments of connection and love. Your focus should reside with the person you are committing to forever and the people who have gathered to celebrate with you—live in those interactions, not in the logistics. Whether it’s unexpected rainfall, or a blemish on a dress, acknowledge your feelings about what’s happened, recognize it’s out of your control, and shift your focus from frustration to finding peace with the situation. Also, you can lean on your support system, which may include your partner, family, and wedding team, to ask for help or emotional support to navigate through these surprises.

5. Take Time for Yourself

In the whirl of activities—from photos to socializing—it's vital to steal a few moments for yourself and your partner. Take time during your portrait session or right after your ceremony to just be together, to soak in the realization of your marriage. These moments of solitude are precious, allowing you both to connect deeply and reflect on your commitment before stepping back into the celebration. At some point in most portrait sessions with just the couple, I try to encourage the couple to take a minute to themselves, no direction, no prompts. Not only does this give the couple permission to slow down and absorb the essence of the moment, but it also yields some really sweet, genuine moments for video and photo.

Integrating these mindfulness practices into your wedding day doesn't just ensure that you're present; it elevates the day from a series of events to a deeply felt experience. As someone who captures these moments for a living, I can attest to the tangible difference mindfulness makes. It's seen in the way couples interact, in the depth of their smiles, and in the warmth of their embraces. Your wedding day is a once-in-a-lifetime experience—embrace it, savor it, and be truly present for it. It will produce a heightened appreciation for the day, as well as a deepened emotional connection enriched with lasting memories of joy and love.

Elopement Film | Andrea + Raul at Glen Oaks, Big Sur, CA

It was so sweet to be a part of this wedding, and all the others, that happened during 2020 at a time when film became more valuable to almost everyone. It was an honor to capture these more intimate gatherings so couples could share them with all the loved ones who couldn't make it, and I'm excited for the weddings this year & getting to film couples who waited to throw a party in 2021 🎉

Mission Ranch, Carmel, CA, Wedding Film | Clinton + Sophie

This picturesque Carmel wedding at the historic Mission Ranch had me grinning ear to ear the whole day. It was a rare day of Carmel sun streaming down on the all the cute little sheep in the pasture right beside two people becoming one. Throughout the day, it was so sweet and heartwarming watching on as Clinton looked out for and cared for Sophie, always taking her feelings into account before acting or speaking. Lastly, with a team including the insanely talented Lilly Red capturing the day to perfection and DJ Trevor Williams keeping the party going, it was a day of classic elegance and a one for books. 🎉👏

Loma Vista Gardens, Big Sur, CA Wedding Film | Anthony + Christina

Anthony + Christina began their day at the Big Sur Lodge, getting ready and exchanging heartfelt notes to each other in cabins on either side of the campground. Their ceremony took place at the historic Loma Vista Gardens adjacent to their reception location Big Sur Bakery, which in my opinion is one of the best places to grab a bite if you are in the area. The day couldn’t have happened without the tireless and precise planning of Mariah Green and with a team including Yehleen Photography, capturing the gorgeous day and Mark Banks providing perfect ambiance with his musical mastery, it was a day to remember and one that was overflowing with joy and celebration.

Holman Ranch Wedding Film | Reece + Sarah in Carmel Valley, CA

I couldn’t have asked for a better day, couple, and team for this picture-perfect fall wedding in Carmel Valley at the always stunning Holman Ranch. All the floral, decor, and everything in-between was masterfully planned and executed by Simone Lennon Events and her team, and it was yet another elegant day filled with classic beauty and so many touching moments. Right as the sun was setting, we trekked up into the vineyards for sunset portraits alongside Jodee Debes who captured the day perfectly and brought so much positive energy to the day. Overall it was just one of those days where everything flowed so effortlessly and Reece and Sarah were just able to be in the moment, enjoying each other and the company of all their guests, and more importantly having a killer party celebrating their love.

Glen Oaks Big Sur Elopement Film

This airy Big Sur Elopement started nestled among the giant redwoods where Brian + Maricela shared heartfelt personal vows with the sun streaming in through the branches, and ended along the epic sprawling Big Sur cliffs as they watched the sun go down over the crashing waves below. One of my favorite moments of the day was not actually at either of these locations, but after our beach excursion as we walked back to our cars in the parking lot, Brian knelt down and gently cleaned Maricela’s sandy feet before she put her shoes back on. His servant heart was so sweet and sincere, and it was a great picture of their relationship.

"I truly believe you were the answer to my many prayers. I love you with everything I have, and I promise to never let you doubt that I do. You believe in me and have shown me a love I don't even deserve. You will always be the very best part of my day. I am yours and you are mine, and of that I am certain."

Post Ranch Inn Elopement Film in Big Sur, CA

Another amazing, ethereal, effortless elopement at Post Ranch Inn. As a couple Travis + Jennifer spent much of their time biking, running, and swimming together for marathons and triathlons, and now they will walk together, side by side for the rest of their lives.

Alila Ventana Elopement Film in the Redwoods of Big Sur, CA

This Big Sur Elopement at Ventana Inn could be summed up in one word: magical. Caile was dressed in traditional Scottish garb to honor his heritage and family, and bagpipers led the processional into the deep Big Sur forest for Caile and Kelly to say their vows surrounded by the towering redwoods.

Soberanes Point Elopement Film | Scott + Chandler in Big Sur, CA

Scott and Chandler met when they were both 15, growing up on farms right next to each other in Georgia. Even though they lived next to each other, they were divided by county lines, so they didn't end up going to same school. They knew and admired each other all through high school and college, but the stars never aligned until their senior year of college when they finally went on their first date. Ever since then, they've been inseparable. They decided to elope along the blustery Big Sur Coast, and finish the day with pizza. If that isn't a classic love story I don't know what is. 👩🏼‍🌾👨🏻‍🌾🍕

Glen Oaks Elopement Film | David + Lauren in Big Sur, CA

This intimate Big Sur Elopement at Glen Oaks was such a sweet, delicate day among the redwoods celebrating two lives becoming one. David + Lauren's joy was infectious and it was such an honor to capture their love alongside photographer, Giana Rada

"When I look at you  I see home. I was born and designed to love you." 🌲

Post Ranch Inn Elopement Film | Casey + Angela in Big Sur, CA

I will never tire of Post Ranch Inn Elopements in Big Sur. Casey + Angela's day was serene yet joyous and Soaring Starkey officiated the ceremony among the massive redwoods. Evynn Levalley joined us for the day to capture the day and we ended looking over the cliffs of the Big Sur Coastline.

"May it be a light to you in dark places, when all other lights go out." ✨

Post Ranch Inn Elopement Film | Lewis + Jessica in Big Sur, CA

Big Sur elopements will never get old, and there's almost no better place to elope than Post Ranch Inn. Lewis recited an old Scottish love song dated back to the early 1800s for Jessica in front of a bed of flowers in the woods for their intimate ceremony among the giant redwoods. If you know how to read old Irish text, here's an excerpt from what he said: "Let love sparkle In her e'e, Let her love nae man but me: That's the toeher-gude I prize; There the lover's treasure lies." 🌲: @postranchinn 📷: @hellobrandonscott
